We always thought we would like Sri Lanka - but not as much as we did. Amazing colours and smells and tastes. The people are great. And the accommodation we had was awesome. There was plenty of rain. We were rained out of some things we wanted to do (with flooding roads being a problem). We asked the agent to put us in 3 star accommodation, but they 'accidently' put us in some amazing places

The next day we drove to Matale through some of the worst rains Sri Lanka has had in living memory. Lucky us. We stayed at another awesome lodge - Jim's Farmhouse. Well, so much for our idea of having less luxurious holidays. We checked out Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dambulla Cave Temple and went on the required elephant ride. Charlie got into taking photos on his camera, including local dogs. While Roma warily avoided the monkeys after getting attacked by one in Cambodia.

A Christmas to RememberThis Christmas will surely go down as one of the most eclectic we have experienced. Staying on a farm in the middle of a rain forest, we had Johnny Cash songs belting out and a Sri Lankan Santa cutting a rug and a waiter firing off a small arsenal of rockets and firecrackers out of his hand. All this, after a dinner of turkey followed by Christmas pudding and brandy butter. It doesn't get much better than that. |
